Messe Frankfurt Stand Builder: Halls, Approvals and Build Reality
Messe Frankfurt is one of the largest and busiest fairgrounds in the world, and it is unusual in being genuinely inside a city. That gives it superb rail and airport connections and a tight, tightly managed logistics envelope. The halls also differ from one another more than exhibitors expect: a design drawn for one can be impossible in another.
This is a working guide to building there — what the halls demand, what has to be approved and when, and what it costs.

The Halls, and What Each One Demands
Frankfurt’s halls span several construction generations, and the practical differences are real:
- Ceiling height and rigging capacity vary considerably between halls. A double-height feature or a suspended banner that works in one hall may exceed the limit in another;
- Column grids are not uniform. Older halls carry columns inside the floor area; the newest are effectively column-free. Your stand plan has to be drawn against the specific hall and stand number, not a generic footprint;
- Multi-level halls change the logistics. Where a hall has an upper floor, goods lifts and their dimensions become the limiting factor for how big any single stand module can be;
- The Festhalle and the congress spaces are a different discipline again — heritage and auditorium constraints mean free-standing, self-supporting builds.
The practical rule: get the hall number before the design starts, not after the concept is approved.

What Building at Messe Frankfurt Actually Involves
Standbaugenehmigung — and its deadline
For space-only stands, drawings go to the organiser for approval before you may build, on a deadline that typically falls weeks to months ahead. For raised floors, towers, suspended rigging and double-deckers you also need a Standsicherheitsnachweis — structural proof signed by a qualified person. This is not a formality and it is not fast. The Technische Richtlinien are per event
Messe Frankfurt publishes technical guidelines for each fair: maximum and stepped heights, set-back rules, how much of your frontage may be solid, rear-wall finishing above a given height, aisle lines, electrical standards and rigging loads. Build to the edition for your show.
Materials need certificates
Wall panels, drapes, carpet and decoration generally have to meet at least class B1 (low flammability) to DIN 4102 or the Euroclass equivalent. Keep the certificates with the stand.
Delivery is a timetable
Slots are booked to the quarter-hour and enforced through a marshalling yard. Miss one at a large fair and you rejoin the queue. On-site storage is minimal — empties are labelled, removed during the show and returned for breakdown. See exhibition stand logistics.
Fair-week costs
Frankfurt hotel rates during Ambiente, Light + Building or ACHEMA rise sharply and sell out months ahead. Budget for it when you commit to the space, not afterwards.
