Messe München Stand Builder: Halls, Freigelände and Build Reality

17 September 2026

A finished custom exhibition stand with a raised meeting deck, staff and visitors, inside a modern uniform-height hall at Messe München

Messe München is the most predictable major fairground in Germany to build in, and the one with the largest curveball. The halls are a single modern generation — uniform heights, consistent column grids, level floors — so a design that works in one hall generally works in another. That is rare.

The curveball is the outdoor ground. Munich’s open-air exhibition area is enormous, and at bauma it carries some of the largest stands built anywhere in the world. Building outdoors is a different engineering problem from building in a hall, and exhibitors routinely underestimate it.

Venue Messe München, Riem (Messestadt)
Layout Eighteen halls in three ranges plus a very large outdoor Freigelände and the ICM
Flagship shows bauma, IFAT, electronica, productronica, BAU, EXPO REAL, analytica, drinktec, Transport Logistic, Intersolar
Key constraint Outdoor ground loading and craneage; booked delivery slots
Typical stand budget €400–€1,200 per m² turnkey ⟨CHECK⟩
Lead time we work to From 6 weeks; 10–12 weeks for large custom builds ⟨CHECK⟩

The Halls, and What They Demand

  • Consistency is the advantage. The halls date from a single build programme, so ceiling heights and column grids are broadly uniform. A reusable structure designed here travels well between halls and between shows;
  • Height limits are still per event. The organiser’s manual governs, and limits are commonly stepped — lower near the perimeter, higher toward the centre;
  • Rigging is available and controlled through the venue’s appointed contractors, on a deadline;
  • The ICM and Conference Center are congress environments with their own fixing and loading restrictions — free-standing builds only.

The Freigelände Is a Different Discipline

The outdoor area is what makes Munich distinctive, and it changes the brief completely:

  • Ground loading and surface. Heavy machinery and multi-storey outdoor structures need load calculations against the actual surface, not a hall floor;
  • Wind loading. Any outdoor structure, banner or tower needs engineering for wind — this is the most common reason an outdoor design gets rejected;
  • Craneage and heavy lift. Exhibits arrive by low-loader and go in by crane, in a booked sequence shared with every neighbour;
  • Weather is a build risk, not a footnote. bauma builds run for weeks, in whatever March or April delivers;
  • Power, water and drainage are run to the plot rather than assumed.

If your exhibit is a machine rather than a message, this is where your show is, and the build sequence has to be designed before the stand is.

Shows Worth Building Properly For

We have built at this ground repeatedly:

  • EXPO REAL — commercial property, and the most meeting-driven fair in Germany. Stands are scheduled conversation venues; our 72 m² stand for PGIM Real Estate was laid out around back-to-back appointments;
  • Intersolar and The smarter E — solar, storage and energy. See our 36 m² stand for S-5!;
  • Transport Logistic — freight and logistics. See our 24 m² stand for Polaris Autoliners;
  • bauma — construction machinery, triennial, and by floor space one of the largest trade fairs in the world. Overwhelmingly an outdoor show;
  • IFAT — environmental technology, with working process equipment and water on stands;
  • electronica and productronica — electronics and production technology, alternating years;
  • BAU, analytica and drinktec — construction, laboratory technology and beverage production. ⟨CHECK current show roster and cycle years⟩

What Building at Messe München Actually Involves

Stand approval and structural sign-off

For space-only stands, drawings go to the organiser for a Standbaugenehmigung ahead of a firm deadline. Raised floors, towers, rigging, outdoor structures and double-deckers also need a Standsicherheitsnachweis signed by a qualified person — and for outdoor plots the wind-load case is part of it. Full detail in exhibition stand regulations in Germany.

The Technische Richtlinien are per event

Heights, set-backs, permitted closed frontage, rear-wall finishing, aisle lines, electrical standards and rigging loads are published per fair. The outdoor ground has its own additional rules.

Materials need certificates

Class B1 (low flammability) to DIN 4102 or the Euroclass equivalent for wall panels, drapes, carpet and decoration, certificates travelling with the stand.

Delivery slots and marshalling

Booked to the quarter-hour and enforced, with minimal on-site storage. At bauma the marshalling operation is on a scale of its own and the sequence is not negotiable. See exhibition stand logistics.

Fair-week capacity

Munich accommodation during bauma, IFAT or EXPO REAL rises steeply and sells out early. Book with the space, not after the design.

How We Work

Concept and 3D visual drawn against your actual hall or outdoor plot. Manufacture in our own workshops. A full pre-build before shipping. Transport on a booked slot, installation with our own supervised crew, on-site project management, dismantle and storage between shows. One contract, one project manager.

  • Custom stands for flagship appearances at EXPO REAL or bauma;
  • Double-deck builds where meeting space has to go above the footprint;
  • Reusable structures that redeploy across the German calendar — the uniformity of Munich’s halls makes it a good place to design one.

Why Maverick

We have built this ground. EXPO REAL, Intersolar and Transport Logistic, across different halls and different stand sizes.

Own production and a full pre-build — see why the pre-build matters.

We drive the stand inside Europe, on a slot we hold, rather than handing it to a forwarder.

One standard everywhere — see the coverage map.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Messe München different from other German fairgrounds?

Two things: the halls are a single modern generation with uniform heights and column grids, which makes reusable stands travel well; and the outdoor Freigelände is exceptionally large, carrying some of the biggest stands built anywhere at bauma.

What is different about building an outdoor stand at bauma?

Ground loading, wind-load engineering, craneage in a booked sequence, weather over a build that runs for weeks, and services run to the plot. An outdoor structure needs a structural calculation that includes the wind case before it is approved.

Do I need approval to build a stand at Messe München?

For space-only stands, yes — a Standbaugenehmigung with drawings submitted by a set deadline. Raised floors, towers, rigging, outdoor structures and double-deckers additionally require a Standsicherheitsnachweis signed by a qualified person.

How much does a stand at Messe München cost?

As a guide, roughly €400–€1,200 per m² turnkey depending on complexity, before floor space, organiser services and staff. ⟨CHECK⟩ Outdoor builds at bauma sit well outside that range.

How early should I start a Messe München stand?

Ten to twelve weeks for a large custom build and six for modular, but bauma and IFAT need considerably longer because of outdoor engineering, craneage booking and the approval timeline. Check the deadline as soon as you book.
